How to Guides

'Given the fact that this is an ex-mining village with all the associated problems I think the park's in remarkably good nick and a lot of that is down to the rangers.'

Pete Robson, volunteer at Warren House Park

How To Guides

... Make a Bat Box
As well as being one of the most threatened types of mammal in Britain, bats are also among the most misunderstood. Far from being nasty dangerous animals, they are attractive small, furry insect eaters which need all the help they can get!

... Make a Bird Feeder
Making your own bird feeder allows birds to get extra food through the bad winter weather and spells of natural food shortage. The most valuable time of the year to put out feed for the birds is between October and April.

... Make a Butterfly Feeder
Butterflies are abundant in the summer and early Autumn, so this is the time to provide a feeder. Making butterfly food is easy ? you either mix up a simple nectar or use rotting fruit. To attract the most butterflies, it is a good idea to put out both types of feeders, as some butterflies prefer nectar while others like fruit

... Make a Bird Box

... Make a Bumblebee Home
Bees are a corner stone of our ecosystem and are facing rapid decline, in part due to their habitats being destroyed. Help now and make a bee a home.

... Make a Habitat Hotel
Habitat walls are palatial mini-beast hotels where insects can shelter and lay their eggs. They can also be feeding places for insects and small mammals, and provide them with nesting materials.

... Make a Hedgehog Home
Hedgehogs can be found wandering around in most gardens in the evening as they hunt for worms and slugs. You can encourage hedgehogs in your garden by creating a place for them to hibernate

... Plant a Tree
Broad leaved trees can provide shelter and nesting places for many species of wildlife. In the summer these trees create shaded areas that increase the amount of plants you can grow and also attract more wildlife to your garden

... Build a Toad Abode
Toads are most active at night when slugs and cutworms are active. During the day, they need a fairly dark, cool place to hide from the sun and predators. A simple way to welcome one of these homely, but lovable gardeners friends is to make a toad abode.

... Make a Wildlife Pond
Ponds support a greater diversity of life than any other garden habitat, and are one of the best ways to attract a range of wildlife. As well as creatures and plants living in the pond, mammals and birds will come to drink or bathe.

If you’re reading this, likelihood is that you’re a regular visitor to your local park, could put the Lake District on a map without too much trouble and don’t mind getting a bit grubby outdoors. Even better if you like getting really mucky…we won’t tell anyone!

You understand the importance of having access to good quality open space. You know how good it feels to get outdoors and take the dog for a walk, whatever the weather. You can’t help but feel a little disappointed and frustrated when you see graffiti, vandalism and disenfranchised individuals and communities. You care.

There are too many communities across the country who don’t have access to high quality open space, due to a myriad of reasons ranging from the economic to the political, and sometimes simply because no one cares.

At the Land Trust, we do care. We’re working tirelessly to change the way people think about public open space, with one ultimate goal: to secure a sustainable future for everyone. For your children, your grandchildren and their grandchildren too.

Please help us continue our vital work to and secure a sustainable future for open spaces and communities across the country, for ever.

If there is a particular activity, species or Land Trust site which is close to your heart, let us know and we’ll do our best to make sure that your donation is used for something you can be proud of.
